Magnolia Public Schools - Board Secretary Dr. Yapanel is currently employed by InvenSense, Inc. as a Senior Algorithm Developer for Audio and Speech Processing Algorithms. In his current position, he is helping mobile devices be continuously aware of their context (always-on). InvenSense Inc. is the leading provider of MotionTracking™ sensor system on chip (SoC) and Sound solutions for consumer electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, wearables, gaming devices, optical image stabilization, and remote controls for Smart TVs. Prior to joining Invensense, Dr. Yapanel was working as a speech scientist for Audience Inc. His major role included helping machines understand humans better in noisy environments. In spring of 2010, he has served as an adjunct faculty at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Department of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering and taught Digital Signal Processing classes to graduate and undergraduate students. Prior to this adjunct faculty appointment, he worked as a Speech Technology Engineer at a high tech company that focused on inventing language monitoring systems for children and on early detection of delay and deficiencies related to infants’ language development from 2005 to 2009. Dr. Yapanel obtained his BS degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering in 1997, ranked 2nd in his class. He obtained two Master of Science degrees: one in Communications Engineering in 2000 and one in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2001. From 2000 to 2004, he pursued his PhD degree in Automatic Speech Recognition at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He was an intern for two summers at IBM’s TJ Watson Research Center in New York. Dr. Yapanel has published a book chapter, 8 journal articles, and more than 15 conference papers in the area of Automatic Speech Recognition and Child Language Development. In the past, Dr. Yapanel served as a founding board member from 2003-2007 at Lotus School for Excellence (LSE) a STEM charter school currently operating in Aurora, CO. Between 2007-2012, he has served as the board president of the school. Throughout the years, he has been involved at almost all aspects of school operation at Lotus; from doing the payroll in initial years to writing grants, purchasing its current facility to elementary school expansion. His vision for MPS is to create a network of schools to provide a world-class STE(A)M education to all of its students. His major mission is to help inspire more students to become the future scientists and engineers, as our Nation is facing a shortage of such qualified workforce.
