This year, we were so excited to attend the Families in Schools 15-year celebration, or as they called it, their “Quinceañera” of building partnerships between parents, schools, and communities to support student success.

The Alliance 2015 Summit started off with a welcome from LAUSD Board Member Mónica García and a keynote address from S. Kwesi Rollins, Director of Leadership Programs at the Institute for Educational Leadership.

The morning sessions
included talks on numerous topics and practical workshops focused on why attendance matters for student success and concepts like teaching the teacher.

Our home office Outreach and Communications Department along with MSA-8 Bell's administration team had the opportunity to sit down with two parents Maria Silva, PTF President, and Dolores Avelar, PTF Treasurer.

Both Maria and Dolores are parents of students attending MSA-8 Bell. While speaking with the parents, the MPS team gained insight on what parents believe are important keys to help students succeed.
“As parents, we need to work together with the teachers because every kid learns differently and needs individualized attention. Not all kids learn the same way.” Maria Silva explained how her kids had different learning styles and how she had to come up with new ways to help her child learn. Working alongside teachers is critical for parents to ensure their child's success.

Dolores Avelar continued the conversation about learning styles and how much MSA-8 Bell has benefited her children. "The fact that my kids want to stay at school all day is amazing! That is very, difficult to do now, and it makes me happy when my I go to pick up my kids and they tell me they're not ready yet."

The Alliance 2015 Summit finished with the Families in Schools Gala. The Gala program honored First 5 LA and JP Morgan Chase for their support and dedication in investing in the lives of students. Our parents and MPS team had the opportunity to speak to the night's Keynote Speaker, Antonio Villaraigosa, 41st Mayor of Los Angeles, and LAUSD Board Member Mónica García about Magnolia.

Our team valued both the workshops and the conversation with our MSA-8 Bell parents. We value their insight and want to continue partnering with our amazing parents to better serve students.
