Giving Back in the Most Unexpected Way

Our students never cease to amaze us and that is why we decided to feature MSA-4 Venice senior Herlinda Torres, who held a Jean Drive for homeless teenagers.

We could easily tell the story, but why not let Herlinda tell it to you, so without further ado, here is Herlinda Torres.

As a senior at MSA-4 Venice I am looking for scholarships to pay for my future college classes. I found one on-line that offered a substantial amount for collecting blue jeans for homeless teenagers - little did I know it would have such a positive effect on my life!

There was a time limit on the collection date so we only had a little over a week, but we collected 27 pairs of clean jeans. One of my teachers and I took the pants to the designated center and that's where I found out about Safe Place for Youth. Over 60 young people a day pass through the center where they can take a shower, get some food, and clean clothes for free. I am looking into volunteering there to help sort the donations that come in, and we are starting another drive at school to collect new socks and underwear, as well as used sleeping bags for the center. Part of receiving a great education from MSA-4 is giving back to the community that needs my help.

I may not get the scholarship, but I was rewarded in a different way.
