MSA - Santa Clara Closure

It is with a heavy heart I bring you the news that after extensive and careful consideration, the Magnolia board voted late Tuesday to close MSA Santa Clara. Even though an exhaustive 18-month search didn’t produce a suitable campus for us, the Magnolia team made a last-minute push over the past few weeks to find a site in order to save our school—one of the highest performing in the Bay Area. That search proved unsuccessful and the board was forced to vote to close our school. The effective date of closure is July 1, 2016.

Dear MSA Santa Clara Families,

It is with a heavy heart I bring you the news that after extensive and careful consideration, the Magnolia board voted late Tuesday to close MSA Santa Clara. Even though an exhaustive 18-month search didn’t produce a suitable campus for us, the Magnolia team made a last-minute push over the past few weeks to find a site in order to save our school—one of the highest performing in the Bay Area. That search proved unsuccessful and the board was forced to vote to close our school.  The effective date of closure is July 1, 2016.

Despite the fact that we provided bus transportation to families, the move to our current campus led to a steep enrollment drop with most parents choosing not to send their students to a campus 45 minutes away. The board ultimately decided that it was no longer sustainable to continue operating a school with the existing enrollment.

We want to do our best to support you during this transition and will do everything in our power to help all of our students find the best possible school. Each family will receive a phone call from the Magnolia Public Schools home office to review all the necessary information and available options with you, to assist you in the transition.

Magnolia Public Schools will be maintaining all student and cumulative records at its headquarters (250 E. 1st St., Suite 1500, Los Angeles, CA 90012, p: 213-628-3634, fax: 714-362-9588) and will disseminate them to schools once a request has been received. To request a copy of your student’s transcripts, please contact Jenny Obuchi at jobuchi@magnoliapublicschools.org or 213- 628-3632.

Parents and/or guardians will also be provided with student information including grade reports, discipline records and immunization records. All of these documents are included in students’ cumulative files, which will be transferred to their new school. Final grades with discipline records have already been mailed to all families. Student transcripts also include specific information on completed courses and credits that meet graduation requirements, including a personalized breakdown of the courses completed and the graduation requirement it fulfilled.

Please refer to the Q&A document we’ve created to answer a few questions we believe you may have. If you have any additional questions, do not hesitate to contact Jenny Obuchi.

We are so proud of everything our students have accomplished during the seven-year run of our school. Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication throughout the years, making MSA Santa Clara one of top public schools in the Bay Area. Unfortunately, much like other public charter schools in this region, an unusually challenging real estate market coupled with a lack of access to facilities became a roadblock we could not overcome.

It’s been a pleasure serving you and we wish you all the best. We have all worked together to invest in our students’ success and they have established a strong academic foundation at this school. We have no doubt that they will thrive not only at their next school, but in college and life.

Sincerely,

Dr. Caprice Young
