MSA-Santa Ana Puts the Pieces Together at Lego Robotics Competition by Ivan Joseph Ramirez

Before the competition had started, the MSA-Santa Ana Pirate team had the core values part of the competition, for which we would eventually win an award. The first part of core values was a team built project. We had a small box of Legos and a base.

Before the competition had started, the MSA-Santa Ana Pirate team had the core values part of the competition, for which we would eventually win an award. The first part of core values was a team built project. We had a small box of Legos and a base. We had to make something that showed how we are a team. What we did was split the base in half. We made one side the ocean and the other land. On the land side, we showed urban run-off. On the ocean side, we put trash and skeletons. The skeletons were to show how animals are dying from the trash that we also put. We also had to explain how this showed we are a team. We said that as a team, we work together to save the animals. We talked about cooperation and compromises. When asked about the coach, we said that he was there for support and did not build the robot. We said that the coach only gave ideas and that we build upon them.

Before the competition, MSA-SA Pirates tested, reprogrammed, added parts, and practiced. We had just enough time to perfect our design. We were able to complete our design just in time for the competition. We also did a trial test where we did what we would do at the actual competition.

During the actual competition, only two people were allowed to work the robot. The two people that went up for the MSA-SA Pirates team were Yakup and Minh. Everyone else sat and cheered for the team. For the first round, we completed the pig, shark tank, and road; totaling fifteen points. On every round, two minutes were allotted to each team. There was no order in which parts of the map the teams had to complete first. Teams could do any one of the “obstacles”. MSA-SA Pirates chose to do the shark first. For the second round, we completed the milking and food dispenser; totaling thirty-three points. Finally, for the third round, we completed the honey dispenser and the seal; totaling twelve points. In total, MSA-SA Pirates had won sixty points and ranked nineteenth place.

Although MSA-SA Pirates ended up being late to the ceremony, they still got there on time to receive our Honorable Mention for Core Values. It was not expected that they would win anything, they ended up with the award. The honorable mention was for how well we did on the core values part of the competition. The people that gave us the award were the same people that judged us.
