MAGNOLIA SCIENCE ACADEMY-3 RANKED “MOST CHALLENGING” CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL IN LAUSD

Five of Magnolia’s six schools recognized in new Washington Post report on nation’s most challenging high schools.

Los Angeles – Magnolia Science Academy (MSA)-3 in Carson is the #1 challenging public charter high school in Los Angeles Unified, the 7th most challenging public high school in the district and the 67th most challenging high school in California (public or private), according to the Washington Post’s 2017 “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” list. MSA-Carson is part of the high-achieving network of Magnolia Public Schools, which operates 10 schools in Southern California with a focus on providing a rigorous STEAM academic program.

Five of Magnolia’s six high schools made the list of more than 2,300 high schools nationwide. Three of those five Magnolia schools – MSAs Carson, Santa Ana and Venice–made the list for the first time.

“By challenging our students, we are bringing out the best in them and helping them realize their full potential,” said Magnolia CEO Caprice Young. “We’re proud and excited to see more Magnolia schools than ever recognized among the most challenging high schools in the nation.”

“It’s an honor to be recognized for providing a rigorous academic experience that will not only prepare our students to be accepted to college, but to complete college ready to pursue fulfilling professional careers or higher education,” Young added.

The Washington Post recognition comes on the heels of U.S. News & World Report naming MSA-Reseda the 14th highest-performing high school in California—making it the top charter high school in LA Unified. MSA-1 was ranked in the top 6 percent of U.S. high schools.

Each year, more than 94 percent of Magnolia seniors are accepted to college and among Magnolia’s graduates, 98 percent complete high school meeting UC/CSU required courses. The Reseda school was 14th among all Los Angeles high schools for its UC acceptance rate—with 30 percent of its seniors being accepted to UC schools.

The Washington Post’s “America’s Most Challenging High Schools” ranks schools through an index formula that’s a ratio of the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year.
