Welcome Back!
Welcome to the 2017-18 school year! As you know, last year we celebrated our 15th anniversary. It was a whirlwind of a year, but as I look ahead to the next one, I’m more excited than ever about the opportunities that are in store for our students.
Welcome to the
2017-18 school year! As you know, last year we celebrated our 15th anniversary.
It was a whirlwind of a year, but as I look ahead to the next one, I’m more
excited than ever about the opportunities that are in store for our students.
We’re thrilled to
continue our unique partnership with Mt. Wilson Observatory, one of Southern
California’s most historic and important science institutions. Earlier this
month, Magnolia teachers trained at Mt. Wilson, co-creating lesson plans in
Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) with astronomers from
the Carnegie Institution for Science (@carnegiescience) for our students, who
will continue to visit the observatory throughout the year. As our kid's study
in the same rooms used by Einstein and Hubble, they will experience the impact
of our STEAM-focused education in a one-of-a-kind way.
Our parents and
families – and their active engagement in the educational process – are the
cornerstone of our success. This spring, U.S. News & World Report named two
of our high schools among the top in California and the nation. Magnolia
Science Academy-1 (Reseda) is the top charter high school in L.A. Unified — the
second year in a row a Magnolia school achieved this distinction! Magnolia
Science Academy-2 (Van Nuys) was ranked in the top 6 percent of 22,000 American
high schools. Furthermore, Magnolia Science Academy-3 in Carson is the #1
challenging public charter high school in Los Angeles Unified, the 7th most
challenging public high school in the district and the 67th most challenging
high school in California (public or private), according to the Washington
Post’s 2017 list.
Magnolia’s mission
is to nurture students to become strong, scientific thinkers and engaged citizens.
I am so proud that 94 percent of our seniors are accepted to college and 98
percent of our graduates completed high school meeting UC/CSU required courses!
Last year, across all campuses, our seniors earned $1.4 million in
scholarships, grants, and student aid.
Lastly, this fall
both MSA-4 and MSA-5 will seek to renew their charters to continue serving the
students of Venice and Reseda to achieve their full potential. We always
appreciate the support of parents, staff and students as we share with the
school board our many successes and our vision for the future.
I wish you a
wonderful school year and I look forward to seeing the incredible achievements
that we accomplish together. Onward!
