MELISSA DE LA ROSA, STUDENT BOARD MEMBER Melissa De La Rosa is currently a 12th grade student at Magnolia Science Academy-5 in Reseda who is serving as the first-ever Student Board Member for Magnolia Public Schools. When she saw the opportunity to become the Student Board Member, she signed up for the opportunity because she wanted to leave an impact as she has been with Magnolia since 6th grade and feels heavily connected to the school. Her brothers have graduated from Magnolia Science Academy-5 and her mom is the president of the Parent Advisory Council. During her term, her vision and goal is to help create ways for students to practice public speaking and leadership skills, engage students and parents in school relations and communication, set up a system to connect with students from other Magnolia schools to hear and discuss the issues they are facing and help formulate solutions that can be brought up to the Board. While serving as a Student Board Member, Melissa takes a proactive role in her school community as she is also the executive secretary of her school's student council and a student representative during the Parent Advisory Council meetings. In these positions, Melissa communicates with her team, parents, and school staff to help the arrangement of fundraisers and fun events for the school community. She enjoys giving back to the community by volunteering in various forms. Firstly, as a teacher's assistant at her school, and for outside programs like FirstBricks where she teaches English to refugees around the world. She is also in Abode communities where she tutors and offers support to students in elementary schools, and a local homeless shelter where she helps keep the property clean. After graduating high school, Melissa hopes to further her education at a University in California and study biological sciences to join the medical field. Her dream is to become an orthopedic surgeon which has stemmed from childhood. |
